2011 Freestyle Results

In the K1 Expert/Pro class, Danny Stock led out of prelims and held onto his advantage to win finals. Simon Braun borrowed a boat to compete in the K1 Beginner class, and ended up winning it.

Note that the Expert/Pro and Beginner classes use different point systems, so the scores are not directly comparable between classes.

2010 Freestyle Results

Originally called for Horseshoe Wave, the 2010 Freestyle competition, sponsored by Valley Mill, had to be moved at the last minute (early Sunday morning) after the river came up a bit unexpectedly overnight. With the help of modern communications technology and very flexible volunteers, it all got sorted out.

No Freestyle finals on Sunday morning

Due to the small class sizes in the freestyle this year, there is no need for the freestyle finals on Sunday morning. If you signed up to help run Sunday finals, go ahead and sleep in...or even better, go boating for fun.

2011 PotomacFest update: All freestyle events will be at the MD Chute, which is at a prime level right now! The competitors' meeting will be in the lower lot of Anglers Inn at 8:30am. You must be registered and have filled out a waiver to compete. I will have extra waivers with me if you need to fill one out.

Despite less than favorable water conditions this weekends freestyle competition at Horseshoe/Bloody Good was a huge success. I'd like to send out a big thanks to all the competitors for coming out, the volunteers who helped judge, scribe, time, and announce, and to Riot Kayaks for sponsoring this year's event. Here are the official results:

Freestyle Location Update!

The current level at Little Falls is 2.75 and falling slowly and based on current upstream trends it should continue to do so for the next 24 hours. I am anticipating that we should have a fair but doable level at Bloody Good Hole/Horseshoe Wave on Saturday. At this time this is the most likely location for ALL THREE FREESTYLE CLASSES. The beginner class will surf on horseshoe and the advanced/expert classes will be scored for moves on both Bloody Good and Horseshoe. Stay tuned for more updates and have a great time this weekend!!!

Freestyle

The freestyle competition was the biggest event at the Potomac Whitewater Festival in terms of attendance with a total of 63 competitors. All three classes, beginner, expert, and pro, showed their playboating skills at the Maryland Chute on Sunday. The format was 2 rides, 45 seconds each, with each ride counting toward the total score in a variety only scoring system. The event stretched from 10:30 AM until 4 PM with a few occasional breaks to take a dip in the river and cool off in the hot weather. Thankfully MD Chute was at a great surfing level and the event went smoothly, despite running two hours over the scheduled time.
